  • Thank you for contacting National Highways via Fix My Street on 9 March with regards to litter along the A1(M).

We understand your concerns regarding this issue. Managing litter/debris and its removal is a constant battle on the motorway and trunk road network. As an organisation we collect more than 7,500 tonnes of litter from our roads each year.

In general, I can advise as part of our strategy we deliver national and local campaigns to discourage littering, place signs at hot spots advising when the area was last cleaned and how much litter we have collected. We also work with local authorities to coordinate litter picking activity and work with motorway services to discourage littering. Please see the attached link to our strategy https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/ government/ uploads/ system/ uploads/ attachment_data/ file/ 937593/ MCR19_0231_-_Highways_England_Litter_Strategy_Update_2020_rev_11-20.pdf.

As a standard we carry out cyclic maintenance on the whole of the network twice a year this covers all aspects of general maintenance including litter picking, drainage and lighting inspections and sweeping etc.

Having checked the schedule the next time this location is due to be attended to is March 2022. We do also carry out daily patrols on the network and if any locations are found to be a particular issue then these will be entered onto the defect system and addressed separately.

We trust the information is of help to you and once again thank you for contacting us. If you require any further information please contact us via the National Highways Customer Contact Centre. They’re available 24 hours a day by phone: 0300 123 5000 or by email info@nationalhighways.co.uk or visit the National Highways website at nationalhighways.co.uk.
