Excessive cones on east bound carriageway

Reported via desktop in the Roadworks (NH) category anonymously at 00:01, Sat 5 March 2022

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3363561.

You have coned off the outside lane of the m20 for 8 miles, at no point on my trips up this road have you been working on more than 100m, tonight there were a grand total of 12 workers visible of which only 2 seemed to be doing anything. Whilst the road network needs maintenance, the excessive use of cones and restrictions for short areas of work is ridiculous. This is the main route to the channel crossings and you plan to restrict it for a whole year. I have seen whole new roads built in the Netherlands in less time.

  • We’re currently working in the central reservation on the London-bound carriageway. To provide sufficient space in our working area to keep our workforce and the public safe - which is our number one imperative - lane 3 of the coastbound carriageway is closed using cones. Once we move to work on the London-bound verge in the summer, the coastbound restrictions will be removed. Much of the work we’re currently doing involves groundwork and improving drainage. Some elements of these works are not clearly visible to passing motorists as they include little to no large machinery. Survey and drainage works can also involve our workforce operating below ground level at times. This usually varies on a day-to-day basis.
