LItter strewn and not cleared

Reported via desktop in the Litter (NH) category anonymously at 13:33, Tue 22 February 2022

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3334773.

Hi,

This stretch of the A194 is disgusting and an embarrassment to the road network. I have reported it a number of times and the reports I see have gone. When is it due to be picked? Because it is near the Amazon depot and a large industrial estate, it suffers from a massive amount of lorry and van traffic and litter here has exploded in the last 12 months. There needs to be a new strategy here as it simply is unmanageable with your current plan.

Updates

  • Thank you for your report concerning litter at this location.

I’ve notified the relevant route manager for this area.

We share your concern that litter on our network is unacceptable and actively work to improve our roads through our litter strategy: https://www.gov.uk/ government/ publications/ highways-england-litter-strategy

It’s a huge challenge to keep roads free of litter and debris as it can take hours to clear each stretch of road, and sometimes it requires us to close lanes, and install/remove traffic management. We’ve had multiple storms and high winds recently which haven’t helped matters, but we’re tackling the worst affected locations as a matter of priority.

We litter pick somewhere on the network every single day. We always aim to do this quicker than the legal requirement wherever possible. Where debris is treated as a hazard to traffic (e.g. debris in live lanes), we use emergency measures to ensure it is acted upon as a matter of priority.

Our current programme is to litter pick most of our network four times a year (not including reactive litter picking for areas that may suffer from heavy litter).

I can confirm that our maintenance contractor will be litter picking in this location during March.

    Kind regards National Highways
