Litter

Reported via mobile in the Litter (NH) category anonymously at 13:43, Sun 20 February 2022

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3327735.

The whole of the M1 and the M25 and most motorways I have traveled on recently are a discrace! Litter everywhere. It’s like driving in a third world country where no one is responsible for their actions or for cleaning it up. So embarrassing to see this much littler on the uk roadsides.

  • Dear Sir or Madam

Thank you for your report of 27 February 2022, regarding litter on major roads.

We share your concerns about litter. Not only is it unsightly, litter is harmful to the environment and wildlife, and can create a road safety risk. The time and money spent picking up what other people drop could be spent on improvements like fixing potholes or safety initiatives.

We’re responsible for clearing litter from Motorways and certain A roads in England. Our Litter Strategy explains how we work collaboratively with our partners and share best practice. We actively engage with local authorities to ensure their litter picking and collection is better co-ordinated with other highway maintenance works on all-purpose trunk roads (or ‘A’ roads).

Litter is a social problem across the country. Our priority is to keep the network safe and well maintained for road users and neighbouring communities. We strongly encourage road users to keep their litter until they reach a location where they can bin it or recycle it.

Millions of customers travel on our network daily and despite our best efforts to clear it, our network quickly becomes littered with rubbish from vehicles and unsecured loads. We have identified a number of ‘hotspots’ on our network where we are focussing our limited resources on a more rapid clean up and implementing innovative interventions; these include the use of industrial vacuums, signage, and ‘drive-up to’ bins.

If there are any sections of our network that you have concerns about, please send details to our Customer Contact Centre via email – info@highwaysengland.co.uk or call us 0300 123 5000. They will raise this with the respective regional team.

    Kind regards

  • More automated rubbish from National Highways, an organisation that takes zero responsibility for roadside litter and constitutes massively to the issue by leaving all their dumped road work equipment everywhere.

  • I have recently had to travel to London by car and could not believe the amount of litter on the verges along the A11. Then last weekend I went on a day trip by coach from Norwich to Bakewell Derbyshire. I was horrified by the amount of plastic in trees and bushes, red and white road cones (surely highways lorries should check when collecting the cones as it must cost more to buy new ones), old tyres and rubbish plus overflowing bins on the A1 on both sides of the road. It is mainly old litter so no one has been out removing it recently. Most of the people on the coach were also concerned and the driver said a lot of motorways and main roads are just as bad. We are supposed to be eco/climate change in this country and anyone coming to our country for a holiday from abroad will have their holidays spoilt by not seeing lovely countryside but piles of rubbish. I have read some of your replies to peoples complaints in 2022 but it seems nothing is being done. If money is the problem why not get low risk prisoners and able bodied Universal Credit people to litter pick a few days a week and if they refuse stop their payments.
