The A12 coming up to the M25 from Colchester

Disgusting roads, two deers, four badges and litter.. embarrassing, filthy, unbelievable and unacceptable.. pay good money to use the roads and this is just disgusting.. the A12 at Brentwood roundabout off J28 is a foot deep in litter.. for crying out loud take some pride in our roads. Just came back from the Dominican Republic and the roads and verges are absolutely mint not one bit of litter nor a weed in sight.. what people must think when the come here. I’m ashamed!!

National Highways manage motorways and certain ‘A’ road trunk roads in England, all other roads are the responsibility local authorities. We, National Highways, are not responsible for Litter on the A12. Under the Environmental Protection Act 1991, responsibility falls to the local authority.

To help, we’re working with them to ensure litter picking is better co-ordinated with other routine maintenance work on our road network. By doing so, we aim to minimise disruption to those using our roads, reduce costs and importantly, ensure safety standards for those picking the litter are met.
I appreciate how distressing it can be for our customers to see animal remains lying by the side of the road. We routinely remove such remains when they are found in the live carriageway. Animal remains that lie further away from the carriageway itself are more difficult to routinely locate. Such carcasses are therefore only ordinarily removed if they present an ancillary hazard, or danger to public health
