Large amounts of litter on verges and central reservation

Reported via desktop in the Litter (NH) category anonymously at 10:49, Thu 27 January 2022

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3270542.

There is a large amount of litter on the verges and central reservation of the A1M between junctions 7 and 8. National Highways say this is the responsibility of the local authority. Please can you clear this litter, as it resembles driving through a land fill site at the moment, not a great advert for Hertfordshire.

  • I too have been complaining to Highways England about the rubbish on their land especially on Chadwell Road and Dyes Lane. I have constantly been told the land will be cleared but they do small sections and leave the rest. This is their responsibility can SBC please ask HE to clear the rubbish in its entirety. It’s really bad around junction seven as well.

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways regarding litter on the A1/A1M. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

National Highways manage motorways and certain ‘A’ road trunk roads in England, all other roads are the responsibility local authorities. We, National Highways, are not responsible for Litter on the A1/A1M. Under the Environmental Protection Act 1991, responsibility falls to the local authority.

Contact details for local authorities can be found by using the search facility at: www.gov.uk/find-your-local-council.

To help, we’re working with them to ensure litter picking is better co-ordinated with other routine maintenance work on our road network. By doing so, we aim to minimise disruption to those using our roads, reduce costs and importantly, ensure safety standards for those picking the litter are met.

Thank you again for contacting us. If you need more information about this, please feel free to contact our Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 500 or by email at info@highwaysengland.co.uk.

    Kind regards
