Deep pothole in centre of Lane 1, A23 southbound, 1/4 mile prior to Handcross services (adjacent to 1/4 mile sign board).

Road surface deterioration is present on the A23 southbound, 1/4 mile prior to Handcross services. Deterioration is across all three lanes, but primarily in Lane 1. This deterioration is visible on Google Street View imagery from June 2021 and a temporary 'uneven road surface' sign is in place, so presumably Highways are already aware of the general deterioration. However, as part of this general deterioration is a very deep pothole in the centre of Lane 1, positioned approx. 30 feet prior to the 1/4 mile sign board for Handcross Services. I am a motorcyclist and recently hit this pothole, causing significant impact. It was raining heavily at the time and this hole was completely masked by surface water. I ride this route regularly and am now aware of the position so can take avoiding action, but someone else may not be so lucky. I would be grateful if some attention could be paid to repairing the road surface in general here, but particularly this deep hole.

Thank you for your report concerning the carriageway deterioration on the southbound A23 carriageway at Handcross. We’re aware of the this and we hae in our forward programme for the financial year a resurfacing scheme 'A23 Pease Pottage to Handcross' to mitigate the carriageway condition.
The deep pothole you highlighted was reviewed by our safety inspector on 20 January and raised as a safety defect. This was repaired later the same day.
