Inappropriate road markings cause merge without indication to drivers

Reported via mobile in the Road markings (NH) category anonymously at 22:57, Mon 17 January 2022

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3248274.

The problem is as you get off the a12 two lanes are created and shortly after markings show left and straight arrow in left lane and right and straight arrow in right lane. Then the right lane expands into two lanes and shortly after that all three lanes have just straight ahead arrows which is clearly not suitable and causing a confusion as everyone sees a straight arrow in their lane and think they have no reason to look for merges as well as there is no merge arrows to indicate a merge system of the three lanes into the two that follow straight on and around the round about to allow everyone to proceed straight on. It would seem the system was based on a three lane roundabout or once had some sort of merge system which have been changed but slip road not adjusted? It seems the most logical way to have it would be to have the left lane say left only from the first marking and the second marking to send everyone on inner lane towards Howe Green, then have the right lane(what becomes middle lane) stay as it is. The third lane created as the right lane expands could be changed from just straight arrow to straight and right but this doesn’t cause any issues between drivers as who ever wants to go right can without impacting anyone. Also I think a sign being put up as you get off labelling the lanes with the changes would help with letting people know the change has took place who would normally use that lane and help people correctly position themselves making it safer for everyone with the added bonus of being more durable then the road markings and more visible late night or busy day time when cars are bumper to bumper covering markings. Hopefully this can be rectified as I see it as hugely misleading to drivers(horns go off almost every time I drive through the junction) and I can imagine new drivers get into a mess when they are taught to stays as left as possible and then end up without a lane to go straight with even though they just drove past a straight arrow in their lane. Kind regards.
