Drain covers through underpass removed (malicious)

Reported via desktop in the Pavement/footpath/cycleway/bridleway issue (NH) category anonymously at 12:48, Wed 8 December 2021

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3167258.

ALL the drain covers in the underpass at location indicated by arrow had been maliciously removed. I have replaced what I could, but if I hadn’t noticed in good time, I would have come off my bike! This underpass is also used by disabled users and scooters etc., which would have been a major shock. The covers were in place 4 days ago: today is Wednesday 8th December.

Updates

  • Today (Saturday 11th December), exactly the same thing found: all drain covers removed, and further damaged by being broken into small pieces. Have replaced what I could. However, this MUST be treated with more urgency. Someone is going to be injured or worse if anyone not aware runs across this channel. If this was a road, the problem would be sorted in a matter of hours! I am attempting to report to police as well.

  • Thank you for your report concerning the removed drain covers in the underpass.

We’re aware of this issue. An upgrade is being looked at to avoid this happening again. We’ll continue to monitor the area.

    Kind regards

  • Just another report to add - Wednesday 22 Dec 2021 -Again, covers removed, broken into even smaller bits(!), so I have NOT replaced them. It would be just as dangerous as they are not stable. I have again reported to Dorset Police. An additional problem could be that because whoever’s doing this might think nothing is being done, they’ll take it into their head to hurl the (cast iron) fragments into the A31 above.
