Reported via desktop in the Structures (eg bridges, fencing, noise barriers) (NH) category anonymously at 10:56, Wed 10 November 2021

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3115274.

The railings are not fit for purpose -rust, bits falling off when touched, too low especially in extreme wind, unmaintained for decades.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways with regards to the issue of the pedestrian railings on Outlane Interchange near New Hey Road. We would agree the railings do look old as they were installed in the 1970's..However they are protected by a road restrain barrier so only need to provide pedestrian protection. As such they are providing more than the required containment for a parapet serving the function it does. The above not withstanding they are at present in our forward one/two year programme for further investigation to take place with a view to replacing them. Dependant on the investigation being finalised the railing could also be upgraded. Once again thank you for contacting us. I trust the above information is of help to you. If you require any further information, National Highways can be contacted on 0300 123 5000 or email info@highwaysengland.co.uk.
