Speed markings on Orwell Bridge

Reported via mobile in the Sign issue category anonymously at 18:58, Tuesday 5 October 2021

Sent to National Highways 1 day, 12 hours, 37 minutes later

Hello, when the wind is high the speed limit on the Orwell Bridge drops to 40mph, the red electric 60mph signs drop 40 mph but they aren't obvious to see if you aren't aware, especially if a lorry is along side you. Would it be possible to start using the large matrix signs on the A14 before the bridge either side to warn drivers that the limit has dropped to 40mph at all please? Many people at my work got caught out this morning as they missed that the small electronic signs had changed . Thank you.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways.

These are still relatively new changes and we are continuing to review if there are any improvements that can be made to the way we make drivers aware of a change to the speed limit. The signs are positioned as per recognised standards and in agreement with road safety organisations and the police.

It is not possible to put the reduced 40mph speed limit sign on the overhead variable message signs as it would contradict the 60mph hard signage in place. However, we are arranging to put wording on the signs to advise drivers to slow down whenever the speed restrictions are put in place for high winds.

Thank you again for contacting us.

    Kind regards,

    National Highways.
