Missing traffic lights
Reported via desktop in the Traffic lights (NH) category anonymously at 09:58, Tue 28 September 2021

This is the only entrance to the roundabout that isn't controlled by traffic lights. This courses massive issues, especially during rush hour when we have to queue on the hard shoulder of the motorway. This is extremely dangerous! Would it be possible to add new lights to the sequence?

Thank you for contacting Highways England with regards to the M18 J3 on 30 September. We understand your concerns regarding this location. The roundabout is under the remit of Doncaster council and the motorway slip roads are under our remit so any works required have to be agreed and with no negative affects to either network. However I can advise we have jointly been looking at this location and a study of this area has been carried out to identify any possible improvements, which I am pleased to advise has now been completed. One of the recommended outcomes of the study was to signalise the southbound exit slip road and adjacent section of circulatory carriageway, and to widen the overbridges to three lanes. With signing and lining improvements where required also. The proposal is now with Doncaster council to complete the design and construct.
I believe the reason for the slip not being signalised before was due to the traffic flows which were not high enough to justify the traffic signals at the time. If traffic flows are too low, introducing traffic signals can create a disbenefit to vehicles using that arm, so is not progressed. With the increase in traffic at the junction due to local developments, this has led to an increase in traffic on the slip road, making signalisation and widening of the junction viable.
We appreciate your patience as we understand this can be a long process but please be assured, we are aware of this problem and Doncaster Council are progressing a solution.
We trust this information has been of help to you and once again thank you for taking the time to contact Highways England. If you require any further information please email info@highwaysengland.co.uk or phone 0300 123 5000.
