Tunnel Sign displayed then went off

Reported via mobile in the Sign issue (NH) category anonymously at 18:41, Fri 24 September 2021

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3023373.

Last night when I was going through the hindhead tunnel when I entered it was displaying the national speed limit sign. Upon entering the tunnel the sign came on at 40mph to which I slowed down then returned back to 60mph around 5-10 seconds later. I presume this was an error by traffic management system and then was switched off but I am aware the tunnel is average speed checked and I would just like to know and have piece of mind that I will not get a ticket through the door for speeding when in fact I didn’t ?

  • Thank you for your patience whilst we completedan investigation in relation to your report.

We can confirm that you won't receive a speeding ticket.

This is because the speed was lowered because an incident was detected by the system. This was confirmed a false alarm which is why the speed was raised again.

You'd only receive a ticket if the 40mph remained, an operator confirmed an incident and you travelled the whole length of the tunnel after the 40mph had been set for a minute or so.
