Traffic light sequencing A5/A49 junction

13/09/2021 - observation refers to traffic flow eastwards on A5 at the junction. Flow into roundabout is 3 lanes. The issue is with the second and third, outer, lanes taking traffic either to the east on the A5 or south on the A49 when the lights controlling the westward ingress from the A5 are at red. Traffic backs up as the southward lane fills and as a result the eastbound traffic using the 'middle' lane of the roundabout either stops or makes a dangerous inward manoeuvre to the left to avoid the rear of projecting vehicles like lorries. The problem is an everyday occurrence but frequently, as today, is compounded by strange sequencing of the traffic lights controlling the flow. Southbound or westbound traffic on the A5112 proceeding through a green light attempting to join the correct queue becomes blocked by projecting vehicles in the outermost lane of the roundabout and now those queuing in the innermost. This obstruction is then encountered by the eastbound traffic causing a further block. The consequence is that a small number of vehicles manage to get through east to west in the outermost lane when the light allows but traffic from the A5112, unable to exit the roundabout, adds to the congestion. Inevitably frustrated motorists make decisions which are likely to cause an accident. This morning, as usual, there were delays on the eastbound approach to the roundabout stretching halfway back to the A5/A488 roundabout. I am sure that people travelling north on the A49 would be able to expand on their problems with this junction. However poorly planned it was originally cannot be changed but surely the timing of the traffic light sequence deserves a thorough rethink to avoid the very obvious problems experienced here daily.

Traffic light timings are causing issues again. They seem to reset themselves on a regular basis. I noticed this today on my way to work

Lights still causing massive congestion on the A5. I cannot believe someone has looked at this and thought that there isn’t an issue. How lazy! Causing unnecessary congestion is an issue, why only let 4 or 5 cars through on the busiest section??? Get it sorted.
