Incorrect sign on A11 before thick thorn junction
Reported via mobile in the Sign issue (NH) category anonymously at 20:25, Sun 12 September 2021
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2996361.
Heading North up A11 the thickthorn roundabout signage shows 4 ( four) lanes able to head straight ahead. In fact the nearside lane (lane 1) ONLY goes left to Swaffham. It ends and does not in any way head straight ahead. This sign needs to be amended showing Lane 1 heading left and only lanes 2,3 and 4 heading ahead as an option.

You can also turn left to Wymondham. (Or McDonald's.) Prior to Swaffham A47 turn. Also Lane 4 really only turns right towards gt Yarmouth. And not straight ahead.

Dear Sir/Madam
Thank you for contacting us via Fix My Street regarding the signage on the A11 before the Thickthorn junction.
I appreciate you taking the time to report this.
The straight ahead arrow is given for A47 Swaffham as this route is not a direct left turn from the northbound approach, if you take the first left entering onto the roundabout you will exit towards the Park and Ride, or Hethersett direction on the B1172 Norwich Road. Markings as you enter onto the roundabout also guide you to the correct lanes for Swaffham, Norwich and Great Yarmouth. This is a complex junction with a number of lanes, so the lane sign is important to route drivers into the correct lanes, as mentioned the road user should have some prior knowledge of the destination they need, the signing needs to be as simple and direct as possible but relies on the destinations being followed.
The lane sign in question gives primary destinations and we would expect road users to plan ahead and be aware of routes, road numbers and destinations prior to travelling. There are also advance direction signs showing the destinations in a ‘map style’ to show which arms are for primary and then local destinations. We do monitor the network to look at sections of the network which have higher than expected collision rates and high severity casualties, this helps us look at potential improvements on the network. We also identify and examine collision clusters, to see if there are any targetable collision trends which are contributing to high severity casualties, where we could implement localised improvement measures. Our last review of the network did not identify this junction for improvement measures or a more detailed review of collisions. There is an Improvement Scheme planned to improve congestion at this junction. Thank you again for contacting us, I hope you find my response helpful. If you would like any more information or for anything else, please feel free to contact us again.
Kind regards National Highways
