Road sign conflict on A52 northbound heading from A453 roundabout slip up to Remembrance way, and then onto A52 northbound

Reported via desktop in the Sign issue (NH) category anonymously at 19:25, Sat 11 September 2021

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2994718.

Road signs on the A52 northbound, prior to where Remembrance way joins, say 30mph. This conflicts with signs where the A453 roundabout northbound slip road meets Remembrance way (and then onto A52 northbound) where the road signs say 50mph on the slip road and either 50mph or 40mph on the northbound corner of Remembrance way. Therefore on the A52 northbound where the three roads merge, there are cars in one lane (the outer lane) driving at 30mph but cars on the inside, merging lanes travelling at 40/50mph. When those roads merge, the cars in the outer (right lane, moving at 30mph) can’t easily change lanes because they are being undertaken (by cars at 40/50mph) which is dangerous. If possible, see camera footage at 09:55am on Saturday 11th Sept 2021 when silver BP07 RPY couldn’t change lanes for faster-moving cars (a black car and then the yellow car – I think reg FL20 FVK for the yellow car). It caused a slight accident involving myself in BP07 RPY and the central reservation to avoid a car crash. Suggestion: could a flashing sign that registers car speed be used on the three-lane A52 northbound section to encourage drivers to slow down? There is one on the A52 southbound, prior to the bridge and that seems to work well. Many thanks.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting Highways England about speed limits.

Thank you for your feedback on the temporary speed limits around the A52 Clifton Bridge repair. Within the next week, we will be making some very significant changes to the traffic management across Clifton Bridge. In making these changes, we will be altering the lanes along which traffic enters and leaves the bridge. This work will also entail a review of the temporary speed limits around the works, and the signs that are used to inform drivers.

We are always grateful for feedback from road users, which we always incorporate into our reviews and discussions.

    Kind regards Highways England
