Motorway bridge netting
Reported via mobile in the Dead animals (NH) category anonymously at 13:47, Wed 1 September 2021
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2972091.
Under the bridge new netting has been placed where birds are nesting . Birds cannot get out from the netting and now are either trapped and starving to death or already dead. There are quite alot of birds and local residents are unhappy with the amount of time that highway England are taking to come out to the problem. This has been reported and so far the issue is not resolved. Local residents are going to endanger there selves trying to break the netting if this goes on much longer. Thanks for your help

It is ten days since this incident was first reported by me, Sarah Keenan. The RSPCA has been in touch with Highways England. Nothing has been done to address birds caught and dying inhumanely. This is an appalling sight for anyone to see, especially children. I find it amazing what people who could help, i. e. Highways England, are prepared to ignore because vulnerable individuals, i. e. birds, have no power of complaint.

I find this horrific for these birds to suffer because Highways England would rather kill the birds than relocate them to a more suitable home. These poor birds are stuck and need freeing if they aren’t already dead.

Thank you for contacting Highways England. Please accept our apology for not responding to your initial report. It appears this was missed and not passed on to the Area team for action.
We have now passed your report regarding trapped pigeons to our local inspector who will review the issue as a matter of urgency.
Following the inspection we'll arrange works to retrieve the birds and we'll aim to provide a further update no later than 16 September.
Kind regards Highways England

Thank you for your patience whilst we investigated your report.
Four funnels are fitted into the netting which will allow the birds to get out.
We can confirm that we have attended the location several times and released birds from under the netting.
We are continuing to monitor the situation closely and will re-attend over the next few days.
