A31 westbound approaching Palmersford Roundabout
Reported via mobile in the Road markings (NH) category anonymously at 22:39, Thu 26 August 2021
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2961526.
Lane 1 Road markings are A31 /A347 Lane 2 Road markings are A31 There is no other road signage which reinforce that Lane 2 is only intended for A31 traffic. This frequently results on traffic in lane 2 believing they can proceed straight ahead onto the A347, whilst traffic in Lane 1 is permitted to turn right onto the A31. It can only be a matter of time before someone is seriously injured here as a consequence. Due to queuing traffic it is often not possible to see road markings at this location, which is the only way you can interpret that traffic for the A347 should only use Lane 1. I have observed a number of near misses and accidents at this location over the years, which I believe could have been as a result of this inadequate signage.

Thank you for your reply. I note that you say that you "don't have plans for a sign at this time," not that the road markings and signage are adequate and fit for purpose. You give no explanation of why you believe this to be so. Perhaps I am missing something, but I find it very difficult to understand your conclusion that nothing needs to be done until "the situation changes." The problem exists now and yet although you recognise it as a potential problem, for whatever reason, you don't believe it requires action now. An explanation of your position on this matter would be appreciated. Perhaps a wider discussion in the public media of this problem I have highlighted, might encourage you to review your position. You can be assured in the knowledge that, if in the fullness of time an incident occurs similar to that which I highlighted in my initial report, and that a contributory factor is found to be one which you have been notified of before, and therefore should have been acted upon, I will take every step possible to publicise the fact that you have known about his problem, and yet decided to do nothing.
