  • Dear Sir/Madam

Thank you for contacting our Customer Contact Centre regarding the closures on the A14. I appreciate you taking the time to report this.

When planning this work we closely consulted with the local authorities in the area regarding the level of work being carried out and the closures needed to deliver this work safely. As we have an extensive amount of work to complete, 24 hour lane closures was the most suitable form of traffic management agreed upon to keep the work duration length down as much as possible in this area.

We understand the lane closures are causing delays however for the safety of our work force and road users, we would not be able to carry out the amount of filter drain renewal work required if we only have night time closures in place. This work involves digging trenches to access the drains to carry out the repairs and having only night-time closures in place does not allow us enough time to carry out the work let alone get the road network back into a serviceable condition prior to re-opening the carriageway in the mornings for traffic. Along side this, some of the work we are undertaking is not safe to do at night so day time lane closures are required to ensure maximum visibility for our crews while undertaking some of our work.

I can confirm we have several different workforce crews present on site 24 hours a day completing this work. We are currently working to schedule and although this is disruptive we appreciate the publics patience while we carry out this essential maintenance work on the A14.

Thank you again for contacting us, I hope you find my response helpful.

    Kind regards

    Highways England
