Diversion signage off (and back onto) the A1(M) is inadequate

Reported via mobile in the Sign issue category anonymously at 09:51, Saturday 31 July 2021

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later

The northbound diversion signage for the closure of the A1(M) in County Durham is inadequate and confusing. There are long sections where diversion signage is missing entirely, particularly through Durham City, where anyone unfamiliar with the area will become completely lost. I suggest that someone has a look at this.

  • Thank you for your patience whilst our inspector reviewed your report.

Our diversion route does not take traffic through Durham City. The diversion route Durham County Council approved for our schemes is the A167 to the west of Durham City. This is to reduce the diverted traffic away from the city, to prevent further congestion. Perhaps the works Durham County Council are carrying out on Elvert New Bridge over the Wear in the city is causing some confusion.

The diversion along the A167 is fully signed and is also our Diversion Route for Unplanned Events (DRUES) route, consequently emergency diversion symbols are on the permanent signs along this route. We are using the permanent signs diversion symbols. This route also signs A1M north and A1M south at multiple locations.

The Northbound diversion will end on 8 August 2021 and the Southbound on 4 August 2021.

I hope this has clarified the situation and answered your query.

    Kind regards Highways England
