Trees/hedges obscuring vision

Reported via mobile in the Vegetation (grass/hedges/trees) (NH) category anonymously at 15:50, Sat 24 July 2021

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2887965.

The majority of vehicles leaving the A47 along the ‘slip road’ approaching the B1108 are travelling too fast approaching the roundabout and seem oblivious to the fact that there will be vehicles travelling along the B1108 or cannot see the traffic heading away from the city. This is probably due to the fact that vision is totally obscured by ‘vegetation’ at the junction and a totally ridiculous 40mph sign just before the roundabout. This is along my daily route to work and I’ve had one to many near misses on this roundabout. The latest being an emergency stop as an HGV couldn’t stop as he approached the roundabout causing me to execute an emergency stop. PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS AS A MATTER OF URGENCY BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY HURT OR WORSE. Thank you.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting Highways England about overgrown vegetation on the A47.

We carry out regular inspections of all our roads and cut back the vegetation where we find that it is limiting visibility of road signs, traffic signals or the view ahead. Ringway started cuts in July on the A47 and aim to complete the end of September. Our 2m swathe is a safety cut to allow safe pedestrian refuge in the case of an emergency stop and to ensure grass does not encroach into the carriageway. We try to preserve as much nature grassland as possible for wildlife which rely on the grass as a corridor for travel and pollination. Where necessary we cut back further. This includes sign and junction visibility to achieve the desired sight lines for safety.

    Kind regards Highways England
