Speed signs inconsistent, possibly not working
Reported via desktop in the Sign issue (NH) category anonymously at 20:12, Fri 2 July 2021
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2836639.
Heading east on M4 approx 18.14 on 2nd July in outside lane. As usual, traffic in all lanes told to slow to 60mph by overhead signs as we approached J19 (M32). Traffic was light, and as got to the 3rd sign the outside lane sign was blank and no traffic ahead so I assumed M4 was back up to 70mph as it is always the M32 exiting traffic that runs slower and uite often the straight ahead option returns to 70mph first. I therefore gradually sped up to 63-64mph. As we came to the next set of speed signs we noticed that our lane once more said 60mph so I again slowed to that speed. But concerned that if the previous sign was just faulty then I might have broken the speed limit inadvertently. Not sure if I saw a camera flash, hence this report. Reg YP61CBY, red Audi.

Thank you for your patience whilst we reviewed your report. We appreciate you taking the time to contact us.
Due to an issue with our database, we're currently unable to access any data relating to signs and signal setting within the South West. We're hopeful that we'll have a fix soon, but following that fix we will also need to carry out additional testing to make sure the data we're providing the public is accurate.
We're not an enforcement agency, although we record some signal data this is for operational purposes only. Our database is not certified or calibrated to enforcement standards, and it is not connected to the variable speed cameras.
We'd suggest waiting to see if you've received a Notice of Intended Prosecution(NIP). You'll receive this with 14 days of your car being caught speeding. Our records we hold do not constitute legal proof of what speed limit was displayed, and could not be relied on in court for the purpose of challenging a speeding ticket. It may contain errors, particularly in the times at which particular speed limits were recorded.
If you receive a NIP, we'd advise you to contact Avon and Somerset Police who will be able to provide you with any photo evidence they hold. More information on how to go about this can be found by following this link https://www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/ request/ speeding-notice/ .
We hope this answers your enquiry. If you have any further queries, please contact our Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000 or info@highwaysengland.co.uk
Kind regards Highways England
