LED street lighting issues on A628 Woodhead Road

Reported via desktop in the Street lighting (NH) category anonymously at 23:05, Wed 30 June 2021

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2830859.

The street lights on this road were replaced with LED units a few weeks ago. It is disappointing that you have chosen to go with a cool white specification despite research findings that light with a high blue content is harmful to human health and disrupts sleep patterns. In addition the lights on this particular section of road after New Road heading towards Barnsley were only replaced last year with a pale orange type that were more appropriate for residential areas. Those therefore had a lifetime of less than 12 months before being replaced by LEDs and presumably disposed of, which is clearly a complete waste of money.

However, there is now a new issue that arose on Tuesday (29/06/2021), whereby the lights were altered so that they do not switch on until way after dark when it is already pitch black. This seems to have resulted in a handful of the lights getting caught in an endless cycle of turning on, detecting their own light triggering them to switch off again. This cycle is repeated every 30 seconds and continues throughout the night. This section of the road is now like a disco which is not only distracting for drivers but is disturbing for residents where the flashing light is spilling in through windows.

Please can you rectify this flashing problem if nothing else. Thank you.

Updates

  • This problem has finally been fixed after 2 months of the lights flashing on & off all night. I see that another person raised the same issue on the 7th August and you responded a few days later. If you had responded to my issue when I posted it on the 30th June it could have been dealt with more quickly. So thanks I guess.
