Lack of diversion signs for cyclists/unclear diversion signs for pedestrians

Reported via desktop in the Sign issue (NH) category anonymously at 11:51, Tue 22 June 2021

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2810072.

I and the local MP, Maria Caulfield, both contacted you when the works on the Drusilla's roundabout were due to start, asking about a diversion route for cyclists. Route 2 of the National Cycle Network ( also part of the Avenue Verte, London to Paris) crosses here between Alfriston and Berwick Station, and his well used by national and international cyclists. We were assured at the time that a route would be signed along the pavement and via Pound Lane (the next junction West). However 6 months later no signage for cyclists has appeared at all and the signage for pedestrians does not indicate where it takes you. In the last couple of weeks three way lights have been put in at the junction and the signage for the pedestrian diversion has become confusing. This morning attempting to cross the junction I ended up following signs saying "pedestrian route", which it turned out were for the workers only and led me inside their compound, and had to be escorted back out. As I had approached the traffic lights from the South there was no clear signage as to where I needed to go to follow the "pedestrian" diversion. This needs to be sorted out a.s.a.p. The needs of cyclists and other vulnerable road users should be addressed as I priority where works disrupt dedicated routes. I should also point out that there is no signage coming South from Berwick Station until you reach the A27 at the end of Pound Lane, with no indication for those who don't know that cyclists can still get through with just a minor diversion. I have seen several instances of cyclists riding along the extremely dangerous A27 at this point, presumably because they weren't aware of the diversion route.

Updates

  • Thanks for taking the time to contact Highways England about the signage at Alfriston Road junction. As well as making the roundabout bigger, we're building a shared use path for pedestrians and cyclists from Drusillas roundabout to join up with the existing path from Berwick Station which will improve safety for cyclists. We're aiming to complete this by the end of 2021. Pound Lane is part of our road closure but as a courtesy to cyclists we've kept part of it open. We're unable to add signage directing cyclists to use the footpath. We'll pass on your feedback about pedestrian routes to our traffic management team at Berwick.

If you have any further questions please contact us via a27eastoflewes@highwaysengland.co.uk or by calling the Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000. Thanks again for taking the time to contact Highways England.
