Zipper Merging

Reported via desktop in the Roadworks (NH) category anonymously at 13:29, Fri 18 June 2021

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2801423.

Due to the works in willingdon and around the main roundabout it looks like a zipper merging system has been put in place - which is effective if everyone understood what this meant. The traffic in the area is horrendous anyway but road users have started to take it upon themselves to block the outside lane on this road to stop people using the merger lane all together. This is causing a back log of traffic effecting Polegate, Stone cross and Eastbourne areas! Highway England need to implement a way to make users aware that it is illegal to just block a road because they don't want people using the merger lane - AND that the merger lane is there to be used and not left vacant! Signage would be effective.

To many times i have seen cars swerve out of the traffic que to block cars using the outside merger lane or blocking the lane all together - It is a ticking time bomb and no doubt someone will end up getting hurt

Updates

  • Thanks for taking the time to contact Highways England. We need to reduce the traffic flow to one lane on the approach to Cophall roundabout to create a safe working zone for our operatives. We're improving the central reservation between Cophall roundabout and Polegate junction to allow for safer and smoother traffic flow. We would encourage all drivers to show consideration for other road users. We'll pass on your suggestion for additional signage to our traffic management team. We're aiming to complete this phase of work by mid-August 2021.
