Litters and pebbles along the stretch of M6 road on both ways.

Highway England has failed to maintain our roads and most highways are covered with litters, overgrown vegetations and pebbles. I have seen this daily along the stretch of the M6 motorway on both ways and the claim that you carry out regular inspections and maintenance activities is what can be described as 'pants on fire'. Taxpayers money has not been properly utilised; if for over a year travelling along this route from around junction 10 to junction 6, and all I see are dirty motorways which will inevitably cause damages to vehicles travelling on this routes. I will assume that all other motorways are in the same condition as the blame will be on the pandemic when it was glaring that this problem of non-accountability has a deep route in public settings. I remembered my own experience of a damaged window screen from flying pebbles on a motorway that you claimed were cleaned regularly. Prevention is always better than cure and taxpayers need to get value for their money.

  • Thank you for your patience whilst we looked into your report. We aim to keep our roads clean and tidy in accordance with our legislative responsibility under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Littering is a societal problem and it’s recognised that more needs to be done to combat the problem of littering by changing the behaviour of those who currently feel that it is acceptable to drop litter. Defra have produced their own Litter Strategy for England and we are contributing to that strategy. Our overall approach to litter on our network is set out in Highways England's Litter Strategy. Our strategy outlines strategic goals and initiatives supporting our vision of a network predominantly free from litter, without compromising safety and delivered affordably. Our litter picking is carefully planned, along with all of our maintenance, to try to minimise the impact it has on road users and ensure that it is cost effective to the public. Picks often require traffic management measures, which are both costly and disruptive. To help reduce the need for these measures, we usually combine our litter picks with other maintenance work. We will be continuing to look for opportunities to schedule picks along the M6, as our schedule of maintenance and safety critical works allow. I am sorry that I’m not able to give you a date for this work at this time. We will be continuing to monitor this situation as part of our routine inspections.
