Roadworks causing accidents

Reported via mobile in the Roadworks (NH) category anonymously at 18:10, Thu 20 May 2021

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2739069.

The current works on the roundabout at the Claydon junction of the A14 are causing a tailback on the A14 (all the way back to the brow of the preceding hill, under the bridge) at rush hours but there is insufficient advanced warning for traffic approaching. This morning there was a collision under that bridge as a lorry on the inside lane was not prepared for the tailback and braked heavily the switched lanes causing traffic behind it to brake sharply and at least one pair of cars to collide. By simply adding extra warning of potential queuing on the carriageway would avoid this. Also the signage for the closure of the outside lane of the off ramp is hidden by foliage meaning some cars will try to use the outside lane, having missed the earlier warnings, and end up in the soft verge between the offramp and A14 carriageway. Evidence of this is clear by the tyre tracks in the verge and resulting vehicle parts strewn on the offramp. Moving the blue lane indicator further up the offramp so it is clearly visible from the main carriageway.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting Highways England regarding the roadworks on the A14.

I would like to apologise for the delay in getting back to you as this was being investigated.

I have spoken to our project manager for this scheme who is going to liaise with the traffic management contractors to review their signage to ensure that all the relevant signage is in place.

I hope this has helped with your enquiry and thank you again for bringing this to our attention.

    Kind Regards Highways England
