A12 junction 29 (Crown Interchange) - access/slip road from roundabout onto A12 northbound - strewn with discarded litter, much of it showing signs of having been there for some considerable time. Also - A12 northbound between j.29 and next turn off (for Langham) - large mattress left on central reservation. However much of the A12 throughout Essex is strewn with litter and is a disgrace to the authorities who manage it.

  • Thank you for contacting Highways England. We regularly monitor the cleanliness of our network and where we consider that the standards set by the Environment Protection Act are not being met, we write to the relevant local authority asking for swift action to be taken to cleanse the area of accumulated rubbish. On safety grounds, any material that is a hazard to traffic (i.e. debris in live lanes) is removed directly by the Police or ourselves as a matter of priority. Unfortunately, litter on A roads and in their laybys are the responsibility of the Local Authority and would need to be reported to them. We hope that by working with the district and borough councils we will be able to help resolve the issue of litter on the trunk road network. We also urge drivers to keep their rubbish with them and dispose of it safely and sensibly upon reaching their destination. Thank you again for contacting us and I hope that this helps with your enquiry. Kind regards Highways England
