Gantry 4598A displaying inconsistent speed limit

Reported via desktop in the Sign issue (NH) category anonymously at 18:56, Mon 3 May 2021

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2704418.

At 1800 hours Mon 3 May 2021 this sign (4598A) was displaying national speed limit. The signs upstream indicated a mandatory 40mph speed limit due to high winds on the bridge. So on the long downhill approach to J34 the northbound carriageway was subject to 40mph but this last sign before Tinsley Viaduct showed national speed limit across the bridge. Coming off the bridge there was another 40mph speed limit (gantry 4613A) past the merge from J34 before NSL limit displayed on gantry 4620A). So a 40mph limit had been imposed both south and north of the bridge but the speed limit was 70mph on the bridge.

Updates

  • 24 May 2021 at 6.40pm this gantry was displaying a speed limit of 50mph. All signals downstream were blank. There was not a national speed limit sign shown at all apart from the static sign beyond J35A. Clearly that 50 speed limit did not apply for that distance as downstream entry slip roads (J34, J35) are subject to national speed limit (only advisory speeds can be displayed on matrix signals).
