Poor Road Surface and Failed Expansion Joint

Reported via desktop in the Road surface (NH) category anonymously at 15:46, Thu 1 April 2021

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2647788.

An expansion joint has failed on the bridge over the railway which has caused a 5-10cm 'bump' across all three lanes of the carriageway. I now find myself having to slow down and brace when travelling over it. I have also witnessed a couple of motorbikes almost lose control when passing over it.

There is a temporary warning sign placed next to the hard shoulder but this is not obvious from lane 3.

The problem is worse in lane 3, and the road surface preceding the bump is uneven and developing pot holes.

The problem has been deteriorating over the past 6 months and it's about time remedial work took place as it's most certainly a hazard and near misses are taking place.

  • Very bad in lane three. Feels like a sleeping policeman. Only a matter of time before a vehicle looses control going over it. Definitely getting worse.

  • This is a real safety hazard. It is incredible that your recent inspection has assessed this as safe. There is no warning sign. It is akin to having speed hump in lane 3. It can only be a matter of time before this cases an accident with a smaller car or motor cycle. It has deteriorated over recent weeks. Please re-assess urgently!

  • How can the inspector say no work is needed when I've been told in the past that this would be resolved over the summer? The lane needs shutting no matter what time of day it is to resolve this issue! Only a matter of time before a motorcyclist falls over and into the path of a lorry!

  • Very dangerous conditions, especially in the wet with cars braking as they go over this hump in the road.

  • There should be a warning sign in place. This is a dangerous situation.

  • Might be worth getting the police involved as Highways England don't seem to be interested in fixing this issue.

  • Can we have an update please?
