General verge litter A1 north jct 6 & 7

Reported via desktop in the Litter category anonymously at 14:27, Friday 5 February 2021

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later

Actually I've highlighted this junction as it is near me but I could have chosen any junction on the A1. The litter is terrible everywhere; discarded signs, banners, plastic bags, bottles, food packaging. I have NEVER seen anyone picking any of this up. I know that HE 'have a legal duty “to ensure that the motorways are, so far as is practicable, kept clear of litter and refuse.' If this is so I do not think that you are doing your job. Undoubtedly the presence of litter encourages other people to litter. Please can you start to do your job as this is unsightly, bad for the environment and will become dangerous for road users.

  • Thank you for contacting Highways England regarding the litter on the A1. Litter on A - roads and in their laybys are the responsibility of the Local Authority and would need to be reported to them. The highways inspectors do monitor the state of the roads and try to inform the relevant Local Authority. However we have no power to instruct them to collect it. Kind Regards Highways England

State changed to: not the council's responsibility
