Erroneous safety signs

Reported via desktop in the Sign issue (NH) category anonymously at 17:54, Mon 21 December 2020

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2442271.

Northbound into Hindhead tunnel a sign shows outside lane closed when there is no closure or sign of works Seen multiple times over many days in daylight hours. Also less often a single sign showing a 40mph limit whilst all other signs showing derestriction. This is unrelated to the damaged barrier limits further south. Today in southbound tunnel a single sign showed a 40mph limit when all other signs showed derestriction. These repeated false alerts will by now have "trained" regular A3 users to ignore safety signs with potential serious consequences in the tunnel.

  • Driving northbound on A3 today exactly same issue, one sign saying 40, others derestricted. Caused some issues I suspect for drivers behind as I saw the 40 sgin first and braked quickly (I drive that way rarely so wasn't aware of prior issue). These confusing signs remain dangerous, both in leading to sudden braking, and in 'devaluing' genuine alerts as per op.
