Bridge rails over A38 From a local resident:

"I am writing to you about the fence/rails on the road bridge that goes over the top of the a38 the bridge by Austin farm primary school. I am not sure if it’s something that can be changed but I will put it forward anyway the fence is quiet low my 6yr old playing with a friend running to school tripped and landed almost on top of the rail I know this is very rare but even for me they only come up to height of my waist the fence could do with an extra 6 to 8 inches on top. As i said it may not even be possible to raise them slightly but it’s always worth a try it could stop a potential fatal incident happening in the future. But I understand with current crises there are more important things to be spending money on but I and many other parents would be glad to see it also.”

  • On the 11/12/2020 one of Highways England’s bridge inspectors reviewed the parapets on the Eggbuckland Road A38 bridge.

The parapet has suffered from a minor impact at the southeast corner. This has been reported to our Reginal Operation Centre and a local repair will now be designed and organised. There are other areas of minor corrosion and defects. In the new year we will carry out a Special Inspection on the parapets, this is a very detailed review of the parapet which will determine the need for any additional investigations or work.

We hope this helps with your enquiry. If you require any further information please contact our Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000 or info@highwaysengland.co.uk.

    Kind regards Highways England
