Thank you for your report.
We appreciate you taking the time to contact us. We understand your frustration, as graffiti on signage and other parts of our infrastructure can be unsightly and may detract from the appearance of the network.
Our team regularly monitors the network to ensure issues are identified and addressed promptly. We prioritise the removal of offensive graffiti, including obscene words, images, or politically themed content, and aim to remove or cover it within 24 hours of an inspection.
While we recognise that graffiti can have a negative visual impact, the ongoing costs of removal, combined with the limited resources available to councils and the police to identify and prosecute offenders, mean that we’re only able to remove or cover graffiti that is deemed offensive. Unfortunately, non-offensive graffiti will generally remain in place and will typically only be considered for removal when other planned maintenance works are being carried out at that location. Any intervention must be proportionate, deliverable, and represent value for money.
The high cost of removing non-offensive graffiti combined with the frequency of repeat offences means it’s no longer feasible to allocate dedicated funding for its removal. Any designated resources we have must instead be prioritised for more critical matters, such as carriageway repairs and safety defects, which have a greater impact on road users.
Kind Regards
National Highways
