M27 J5 sliproad litter

Reported via mobile in the Slip Roads (NH) category anonymously at 15:00, Wednesday 30 September 2026

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 10174465.

National Highways tell me this stretch is monitored monthly with the latest monitoring due today (30 September). They say the last time it was checked if was graded B or above. I assume, given no letter clearance has taken place for many years and certainly not since the last inspection, that this grading means a litter clearance is not justified. This cannot possibly be true as there are bags and bags of litter, abandoned traffic cones, larger items from vehicles etc that have been there for years. This therefore does not clearing and I have also reported this to my MP.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about litter.

We have passed your report to our local inspector who will review the issue as part of their next safety inspection and arrange any remedial action.

Littering by people is, unfortunately, a behaviour that has a big impact on some parts of our roads. We aim to keep our roads as tidy and free of litter as we can. Our litter picking is carefully planned to try to minimise the impact it has on road users and the safety of our people.

Litter picks often require lane closures, which are disruptive to traffic flow. To help reduce the frequency of this disruption, where we can, we usually combine our reactive litter picks with other maintenance work which can result in what appears to be a delayed response.

    Kind regards

    National Highways
